When we hiked out from our second eight-day backpacking trip, we were
pleased to see that the Forest Service workers had managed to clear all the
major obstacles on the Pine River Trail between Flint Lake Junction and the Pine
River trailhead. Since all the work in the wilderness is done without power
tools, this required a major effort. Trails into the high country, such as the
Flint Lake trail, were not cleared as of the first week in August. Completing
the work will require a lot of work, since we can attest that the largest
avalanche on the Flint Creek blocked a quarter mile of trail.
