After thirty-five years of backpacking, this was the first time I ever
took a pack animal, a llama rented from Buckhorn
Llama Co. Our llama, "Theo," was exquisitely trained: very
gentle and well-behaved. In eight days, there was absolutely no spitting or
other challenging behavior. He went easily wherever we led him, though
we changed our trip itinerary to avoid crossing severe avalanche debris
fields located up Flint Creek Trail. Normally we walked along giving him
five feet or so of lead rope. In this image, Karen is holding the lead rope
up close to Theo as she negotiates a steep spot to keep him from trying to
walk ahead of her.
