Weminuche Wilderness, CO, June, 2005
The Weminuche Wilderness east of Durango, CO is the largest Federal Wilderness Area in the State. We have hiked there most years since 1987, usually mid to late June. This year we took two eight day backpacking trips, both times from the Pine River Trailhead northeast of Valecito Reservoir. Trails into the high country were largely obstructed by extensive avalanche debris fields resulting from unusually heavy snowfall last winter. We rented a llama on the first trip.
