Hiking and ski trails abound in the vicinity of historic Timberline
Lodge near 5,000 feet on the slopes of 11,245 foot Mount Hood. The dry, volcanic
soil supports phlox,
brilliant Indian
Paintbrush and scrubby evergreen trees. Other Cascade Peaks,
including Mount Jefferson
and the Three Sisters, can be seen from these trails. The lower slopes
and foothills of the mountain are densely
forested and rich in ferns and moss.
