The white haze in the background is smoke from the huge Lemon Reservoir fire
of 2002. The fire started to our west on the second evening of a planned ten
day trip. Mornings were clear, but the smoke drifted into the high country
in the afternoons. Because the smoke seemed to come from all directions, it
was unclear which direction we should go, or whether we should continue our
route. Two days after we hiked out, the entire area, including the parking
areas around Valecito Lake were evacuated. The following week, much of the
area around Valecito Resevoir burned. Fortunately, the fire did not get into
our favorite hiking country, including the valley of Moon Lake, seen below.
This view is from the pass above Rock Lake, the other side of which is shown
in the previous picture.
