_MG_2690-MoonlightAndOrionOnSouthEastRim-uncompressed_filtered-desaturated  [10 of 46]
The starry skies to the south decorate this moonlit scene of the Southeast Rim of the Chisos Mountains at Big Bend National Park, Texas. The belt and sword of the constellation Orion are visible immediately above the highest branch of the tree in the center. Immediately behind the central, dead tree (elevation about 7,500 feet) is a sheer drop to the desert far below. The desert descends eventually to the Rio Grande, about fifteen miles away (elevation 2,500 feet). The faint mountains on the horizon are in Mexico.
