Here I display digital photographs from back country locations in
the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada, the American southwest, Big
Bend National Park, the Oregon
Coast, and wildlife of the Texas Gulf
Coast. Share images from the galleries below with friends and family

Because of high gas prices, we
traveled fewer miles this summer. We took two backbacking trips: a
leisurely three week backpack in one of our favorite wild
country areas, the
Weminuche Wilderness east of Durango, Colorado, and second,
much shorter trip into gorgeous
Ice Lake Basin
just west of Silverton, CO. Carrying everything for three week
outing was made possible by hiring
"Mercer" from Buckhorn Llama Company. Though we have hiked the Weminuche many times before, every time is new adventure.
Besides returning to many of our favorite spots (Flint
Lake,
Rock Lake, and the
region between
Rio Grande Pyramid and the Ute Lakes), we visited one of the
less commonly traveled areas above
Snowslide Canyon, where we enjoyed spectacular views of the
stormy peaks and encountered numerous
herds of elk. Ice Lake Basin is easily accessible as a dayhike and ideal for a few day
backpack. It has
colorful, sheer cliffs,
brilliant turquoise lakes,
spectacular waterfalls and
wildflowers galore.

I have also added more images from
a spring walk at our favorite, local Texas State Park,
Brazos Bend,
a diverse habitat for,
water birds,
wading birds,
insects
and
alligators.
My summer 2005 photos are in
four galleries: Oregon
Coast-2005, Mount Hood-2005,
Weminuche
Wilderness-2005 (east of Durango, CO) and Bridger
Wilderness-2005 (near Pinedale Wyoming). During a brief stop
in Yellowstone NP we
watched an immature Bald
Eagle attempting without success to fly with a large fish.
During sixteen days of backpacking in the Weminuche Wilderness,
the spring run-off
was heavy and avalanche
damage to trails from unusually heavy snowfall last winter was extensive.
Snow
remained widespread in the Weminuche above 10,500 feet through late
June, and many trails were still blocked by avalanche debris in
early August. During ten nights out in the Bridger Wilderness in
late July, there were many backpackers, though fewer hikers ventured
to the more remote trails north
of the Jean
Lakes (Shannon Pass,
splendid Peak
Lake and Cube Rock
Pass.) Viewing
